Jovica Ilic, one of our sys admins, came to Berlin from Serbia in 2014. Today his role includes keeping our complete infrastructure up-and-running smoothly. We asked him to tell us the story of how he came to work at Adjust.
Why did you want to work at Adjust?
It was simple. I saw an ad online; I was in finishing my Master’s and coming to the point where I needed to decide what to do with my future next. I was choosing between moving to Berlin or San Francisco, or continue studying.
The job offer I received from Adjust was a dream job – they were looking for a junior system administrator. The second thing was Berlin – I was already hoping to move here with my girlfriend, who was in Poland at that time.
How did you come to work at Adjust?
I applied and was invited to come in for an interview, where we talked about the tech stuff I had worked on in the past. The same day, they told they want to hire me - but that’s the moment when the big struggle started!
Adjust’s HR manager realized that my degree wasn’t recognized in Germany - which meant at the time that I could not be hired. Because of this, Adjust hired a lawyer to investigate the case and devised a plan for me to live and work in Germany.
In the end, it became clear that I couldn’t get a contract; and I had three months to leave the country. The solution was to get a degree in Serbia that would be recognized in Germany - I knew it would take me at least one more year to complete it, but I had to do it.
I returned to Serbia and said to the founders, “wait for me for eight months and I’ll be back.” I went back to Serbia and focused full-time on my studies. In the end, it actually took me more than eight months, but the founders did wait for me and for that I am very grateful.
I finally graduated that summer and it took me around two more months to get the visa. Just one day before the embassy appointment, I received the last document I needed for my visa from HR - my university degree confirmation from Germany.
In short, I applied for the job at Adjust in the beginning of 2014 and finally arrived in Berlin on the 9th of September 2015.
How is Adjust different from other companies?
It’s mainly different from other companies because of the culture itself that founders insist upon. I also really like the people in the company – my team colleagues are leaders in the industry.
What’s your Slack avatar, and why did you choose it?
I don’t really have idols; I try to listen and gain insight from different types of people, no matter their occupation or age.
My online avatar is a stamp from the 12th century, from a young Serbian prince who ran away from his father and became a monk. He became one of the greatest Serbians in history and a founder of the Serbian Orthodox Church.
