Glossary What is artificial intelligence (AI)?

Defined: AI (Artificial intelligence)

Artificial intelligence (AI), is the name for the technology that simulates human intelligence processes via machines, such as digital computers. AI is designed to imitate the problem-solving capabilities of the human mind to perform tasks.

What can AI do?

Artificial intelligence is under constant development, but the bulk of AI tasks fall under the categories of learning, problem-solving, reasoning, speech recognition, visual perception, and comprehending natural language. These fall under two main types of AI functions: Narrow AI (weak AI) and general AI (strong AI).

Narrow vs. general AI

Narrow and general AI mimic the cognitive functions of the human mind, but they differ in the following ways.

Narrow AI

Also known as “weak AI”, this type of AI is created and trained only for a specific task based on certain contexts, parameters, and conditions. As narrow AI only pulls information from a particular dataset, it can only perform the tasks for which it has been created.

Narrow AI examples

  • ChatGPT
  • Google Translate
  • Facial recognition on Meta

The most common narrow AI techniques are natural language processing, computer vision, and machine learning.

General AI

In contrast to narrow AI, general AI is often dubbed “strong AI” as its purpose is to carry out any intellectual task like a human and should therefore, be able to think, learn, and apply intelligence like humans. In theory, general AI will have a mind of its own and not be limited to pre-defined functions like narrow AI. It’s considered the future of AI.

General AI examples: True general AI systems are not a reality yet.

General AI techniques are said to be imagination, self-awareness, and natural language understanding.

Super AI

This futuristic type of AI is also worth mentioning, as the goal of super AI is to operate beyond human-level intelligence and eventually outsmart them. However, as super AI is still the stuff of science fiction (for now!), we’ll leave it at that.

What is an AI model?

Artificial intelligence models are software programs trained with algorithms via a set of data to perform specific tasks by recognizing patterns.

Types of AI models

The most common AI learning models include:

  • Deep neural networks
  • Linear regression
  • Logistic regression
  • Decision trees
  • Linear discriminant analysis
  • Naïve Bayes
  • K-nearest neighbor
  • Random forest

The type of AI model selected determines how it’s trained, but below is a simplified example of how to train an AI model.

AI in app development

App developers can now utilize a wide array of AI tools for app development. Consider the following areas of AI for app development to grow user engagement for your mobile app.

Recommendations to users

App developers can use AI-powered recommendation engines to sift through user purchase history, preferences, and (opted-in) behavior to generate personalized recommendations.

Greater personalization

App developers applying AI in app development can take advantage of AI algorithms to analyze user data to adapt their layouts, features, and content to an individual user.

Natural language processing

The implementation of natural language processing is nothing new. Think chatbots, voice assistants, and language translation capabilities as examples of AI-powered features app developers can include in their mobile apps.

Adjust and AI in apps

Innovation is central to Adjust and how we ensure our measurement and analytics platform is ahead of the curve in terms of its technology. We’ve been studying artificial intelligence in mobile apps for some time now and are already harnessing AI in our products.

For example, our next-generation pLTV solution, currently in beta, utilizes AI to analyze layers of trends to predict a user’s future behavior. This allows our clients to predict the lifetime value (LTV) of users in a privacy-centric way. Learn more about predictive analytics as well as four ways Adjust’s next-gen measurement defines innovation in the mobile app industry.
